Dairy Input Production and Biotechnology Sector

Overall Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Produce specialized breeding inputs as required in extension following standard operation procedure and GMP
  • Forecast and manage demand and supply of specialized inputs for breed improvement
  • Conduct research on ET, Semen quality & Reproductive technologies
  • Provide technical expertise in specialized areas for training and capacity building of field staff
  • Monitor, and produce periodic reports, research briefs and journal articles
  • Implement strict bio-security measures for the input production unit

Roles & Responsibilities Of Different Units Under the Input Production Sector

Frozen Semen Processing and Embryo Transfer Unit:

  1. Function as a custodian to produce and supply the required quantity of frozen semen from different breeds as per demand
  2. Ensure strict compliance of SOP on semen and embryo production at all times
  3. Ensure strict biosecurity measures at the semen processing laboratory at all times
  4. Procure and supply progeny-tested conventional and sex-sorted semen to meet the demand at Govt. nucleus farms and in the field
  5. Procure semen processing and ET equipment and consumables required for semen processing and embryo production
  6. Procure AI equipments and consumables for use at the centre and supply to the extension
  7. Maintain inventory of frozen semen, equipment and consumables
  8. Develop an action plan for Embryo production trials in Nublang initially and with Jersey at a later stage

Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) Plant Unit:

  1. Produce and supply the required quantity of Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) to meet the demand in the country
  2. Procure and supply LN2 during the breakdown of the LN2 plant at the centre
  3. Procure LN2 containers as required for storage, and transport of LN2 and semen for Community AI Technician (CAIT) usage
  4. Procure spare parts for timely maintenance of LN2 plants
  5. Ensure timely maintenance of Liquid Nitrogen Plant for un-interrupted production of LN2
  6. Maintain inventory of production and supply of LN2, LN2 containers and spare parts
  7. Develop SOP on optimal care and handling of LN2 container and disseminate to extension for implementation

Fodder Development Unit:

  1. Produce and conserve adequate fodder as per the requirement of farm animals at the centre and at Royal herds
  2. Carry out pasture development, management and maintenance works including fodder tree plantation/live fencing works/irrigation facilities at the centre and at Royal herds
  3. Procure fodder seeds and seedlings, fertilizers, and agriculture tools as per requirement and their maintenance
  4. Maintain inventory of farm types of machinery and their maintenance
  5. Carry out regular supervision of work of Pasture Attendants (ESPs)

Farm Unit:

  1. Procure and manage semen donor bulls and elite donor and recipient cows for Embryo Transfer (ET) technology at the centre
  2. Conduct research on ET, Semen quality & Reproductive technologies
  3. Procure animal feeds, medicines and vaccines for semen donor bulls and ET animals
  4. Monitor and provide regular health coverage services for semen donors bulls and ET animals at the centre
  5. Ensure screening of semen donor bulls and ET animals on half yearly basis against infectious and contagious diseases in collaboration with NCAH, Serbithang
  6. Oversee the regular supervision of farm attendants on adequate feeding, animal welfare and other management aspects
  7. Maintain proper inventory and farm records
  8. Ensure timely maintenance of animal sheds and other associated infrastructures
  9. Maintain strict farm bio-security at all times
